Hand wash symbol meaning
The hand wash symbol on a care label means you should wash the garment by hand only—do not put it in a washing machine. It’s common on delicate fabrics like silk, wool, and lace. Here’s what it looks like and how to follow it.
When you see the hand wash symbol, use lukewarm water (around 30–40°C), a gentle detergent, and minimal agitation. Don’t wring or twist the garment; gently press out water and dry flat or on a padded hanger. Machine washing can shrink, stretch, or damage items that require hand washing.
Many “hand wash only” items are wool, silk, cashmere, or have embellishments. Following the hand wash symbol keeps these garments in good condition and extends their life.
